On Thursday, June 19th, HBSP members gathered at the Prince Waikiki for lunch and the annual membership meeting, anticipating a memorable afternoon in the company of Bob Sigall, celebrated author and chronicler of Hawaii’s lesser-known histories. True to expectation, Sigall delighted the audience with his signature tales of old Hawaii—stories vibrant with the quirks, charms, and characters that have shaped the islands.
Yet, Sigall’s presentation was more than an exercise in nostalgia. Seamlessly woven through his anecdotes was a compelling theme that challenged the room’s assumptions about Hawaii’s place in the wider world of business. Too often, he noted, outsiders view Hawaii as little more than a paradise defined by surf and sandals—a place to play, not to lead or innovate.
Sigall artfully flipped this narrative, spotlighting stories of individuals and enterprises from Hawaii who have quietly achieved remarkable success on the global stage. From entrepreneurs who have steered world-class companies to talents who have left their mark in fields as varied as technology, finance, and the arts, Hawaii has consistently produced leaders who defy the island’s stereotyped image.
His address resonated with the audience, offering both the comfort of familiar local lore and the invigorating recognition of Hawaii’s capacity to surprise and excel. In Sigall’s telling, Hawaii is not merely a destination for escape but a wellspring of ambition, achievement, and ingenuity—a place whose stories, both old and new, deserve to be heard.
Members left the luncheon with a renewed sense of pride in Hawaii’s past and a widened perspective on the islands’ economic future, thanks to Bob Sigall’s artful storytelling and keen insight.
